Some Candidates "Don't Care What We Think"

An excerpt from the article, Absent Pols Anger Youth Vote, by John Whitson, in the New Hampshire Union Leader

MANCHESTER – Young political activists say the message this week from leading candidates for President has come through loud and clear: The youth vote isn't important.

"It's extremely disappointing, and it says to us that they don't care what we think," Julie Heffron, student body president of Sowela Community Technical College, said yesterday.

Heffron is part of a 41-member delegation from Louisiana attending the four-day College Convention 2008, which concludes today at the Center of New Hampshire downtown.

Sponsored by New England College, the convention has welcomed dozens of candidates, from household names -- such as Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., and former Gov. Mike Huckabee, R-Ark. -- to the obscure.

But candidates drawing the strongest poll numbers on both sides of the aisle have forsaken hundreds of young people gathered here from throughout the country.

Romney Glad To Be Losing

From Robert Novak's recent crayon scriblings;

WASHINGTON -- Strategists for Mitt Romney's Republican presidential campaign were actually pleased that fast-rising Mike Huckabee moved ahead of Romney in the Rasmussen poll in Iowa, eliminating surprise if Huckabee finishes first there in the Jan. 3 caucuses.

Does the Romney campaign think we are big enough idiots to believe that they are pleased to learn that they are dropping in the polls (not just in Iowa, but everywhere)?

Fred Thompson - Campaigning Would Be Great If It Weren't For The People

An excerpt from an article in the NY Times;

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Nov. 29 — Fred D. Thompson promised even before formally announcing his candidacy for president that he would not run a customary campaign. He was not kidding.

The traditional town-hall-like meetings — where candidates are peppered by dozens of questions from voters, often for more than an hour — are not for Mr. Thompson. Nor is other aggressive retail campaigning.

Instead, he holds sessions billed by the campaign as chances to “meet Fred,” often little more than photo opportunities, with the staging not especially well choreographed. And even those are relatively few, with a typical week instead dominated by fund-raisers that are closed to the press and the general public alike.

Indeed, what has defined his campaign recently has to a large degree been his absence from the trail.

Georgia Right To Life Endorses Mike Huckabee

As an affiliate of National Right to Life, we give grateful recognition for the role they play in protecting the unborn. “We want to acknowledge their leadership and thank them for allowing individual states to do what they believe is best for their state. Under normal circumstances we would communicate their Presidential endorsement to our 225,000 households.” said Bryan Lash, PAC Director for GRTL. “While we appreciate their leadership and support, we believe that Gov. Huckabee is the strongest and most effective pro-life candidate in this race,” continues Lash. “Passing a Personhood Amendment here in Georgia is our key issue in achieving our objective to extend the protections of the law to all ‘persons’ both born and unborn. Support of a candidate who ushered a similar amendment through his own state speaks volumes to us. Mr. Huckabee’s recent surge in the polls, we believe, demonstrates that he is the pro-life movement’s best hope in defeating pro-abortion candidate Rudy Giuliani. When elected, Mike Huckabee will work hard to establish our goal of restoring respect and effective legal protection to all innocent human beings, from the moment of fertilization until natural death.”

Garrison Keillor On Mike Huckabee

An excerpt from an article in the Kansas City Star;

The sudden rise of Mike Huckabee in the Republican jousts is a cool plot turn, one that makes you lean forward and turn up the sound.

An amiable, well-spoken Southern conservative with a Gomer Pyle face challenging the teeth-baring Giuliani and the sleek Romney. You watch him field questions for a few minutes and the man’s appeal is pretty clear. He comes off as a real person, not a caricature; he sounds like a guy talking to you, not a stiff with a set of applause lines.

He’s a straight conservative but with exceptions — he’s in favor of health care for poor kids, he dares talk about the environment. And he’s a new contender, and that’s a big point in his favor. Romney is synthetic and Giuliani is toxic and people are ready for the next thing. And now here is a smart conservative who doesn’t hate anybody.

Mike Huckabee At Liberty University

An excerpt from an article by Jonathan Falwell;

It’s a long road to Election Day 2008 and any number of things could happen between now and then, in terms of who gets the party nominations.

As that date approaches, it behooves Christians to begin examining the presidential candidates. We must ascertain which one best characterizes the values and ideals we have determined for our candidates since we discovered Ronald Reagan.

But there’s more to the Christian life than the dirty game of politics.

We continue to witness a growing moral divide in America. Neither politics nor politicians can halt this crisis. Only a change in the heart of our nation can halt our moral collapse. That is where the church of Jesus Christ — that is called to stand for biblical truth in this era of situational ethics and moral reasoning — must boldly and compassionately confront the culture as never before.

II Chronicles 7:14 tells us, “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”

That is the ultimate key for our nation. And Christians must embody this verse with passion and a true sense of expectation for God to once again pour out His blessings on America.

I love this nation. And I want to do my part to share Christ with as many people as possible. This truly is the only way we will see America return to its full greatness.

Huckabee Moves Up 13 Points In South Carolina

"In South Carolina, Huckabee has gone from 5 percent to 18 percent in a month. Romney has gone from 29 to 21 percent in the same period. New Hampshire is critical to Romney now. But one gets the feeling that he is sitting atop a souffle. If he loses Iowa, it could drop suddenly. And the South will never vote for a Mormon." -- Andrew Sullivan, at TheAtlantic.com

Faith Is Key To Fighting AIDS

An excerpt from an article on CNN;

MOUNT AIRY, Maryland (CNN) -- President Bush on Friday stressed the role of faith-based groups in the fight against AIDS, calling the struggle one of conscience and morals on the eve of World AIDS Day.

Activists call for more AIDS funding in front of the White House, draped with a giant red AIDS ribbon.

Bush was speaking at Calvary United Methodist Church in Maryland after meeting with representatives of religious and community groups.

"Faith-based groups like these are the foot soldiers in the armies of compassion," he said. "They are helping to defeat this epidemic one soul at a time."

Romney Campaign Is Sucking Air

An excerpt from an article by Dick Morris;

This is not a good time to be Mitt Romney. After almost a year of having the Iowa and New Hampshire airwaves to himself, he is now facing a challenge on the right from Mike Huckabee and Fred Thompson and on the left from Rudy Giuliani.

Pressed from both sides, he is leaking votes. Where once a sweep of the table of the early states (Iowa, New Hampshire, Michigan and South Carolina) appeared in the cards, he is now looking at a possible defeat in Iowa, derailing his plans.

The latest Iowa Rasmussen Poll (11-26-07) shows Huckabee in the lead at 28 percent with Romney at 25 percent, and both Thompson and Giuliani trailing way back at 12 percent.

Calls in Sudan for Execution of British Teacher

NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov. 30 — Hundreds of demonstrators in Khartoum, Sudan’s capital, poured into the streets on Friday demanding the execution of a British teacher who was convicted of insulting Islam because her class of 7-year-olds named a teddy bear Muhammad.

Protesters in Khartoum today demanded the execution of a teacher convicted of insulting Islam after her students named a teddy bear “Muhammad.”

New Hampshire Falling In Love With Huckabee

An excerpt from an Associated Press article by Charles Babington;

"He's the man with the momentum this week," University of New Hampshire political scientist Dante Scala said Friday, as Huckabee began a three-day state swing.

On the surface, at least, Huckabee's campaign in New Hampshire seems far more energized following the latest Iowa poll results and his performance in Wednesday's televised debate in Florida.

"There are more cameras here today than there used to be people" at Huckabee events, said supporter Stuart Arnett, a Concord economic development consultant, as he watched a throng of local and national journalists jockey for space at the day's first event.

As a Democrat, New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch can hardly endorse Huckabee, but he warmly introduced him as "my friend" to 125 people at a Concord Chamber of Commerce luncheon.

Mike Huckabee Goes On The Record

Marvin Olasky says "Huckabee answered questions brilliantly"

From an article by Marvin Olasky in World Magazine;

The GOP YouTube debate on Nov. 28 was fascinating and clarifying. If its impressions harden, two of the big five presidential candidates are toast, and what seemed like semi-anarchy is likely to settle down to a traditional city vs. country contest, with a compromise choice possible.

Mike Huckabee answered questions brilliantly. He has the feeling of George W. Bush at his best but the speaking ability that Bush lacks. Huckabee's rise is despite evangelical leaders, not because of them—and some of the leaders are now racing to follow their followers.

Rudy Giuliani also seems authentic, with his refusal to tickle the ears of interest groups refreshing but also worrisome: It's fine to depart from traditional political inanities, but does that also suggest a Nietzschean willingness to depart from traditional ethical concerns? Giuliani is clearly not pro-life, and his use of security guards during visits to his mistress reminds voters of adultery past.

Mitt Romney and Fred Thompson are faltering, with organizational clout but little more. Romney, asked a question, seems to run quickly through all the computer chips in his brain so as to find the politick answer. Thompson's mental computer runs at Atari speed.

Chuck Norris Fighting Beside Mike Huckabee

An excerpt from a Los Angeles Times article written by Tina Daunt,

An A-list celebrity endorsement can lift a presidential campaign. But Chuck Norris' seal of approval can kick-start the Airbus.

Take Mike Huckabee's political efforts, for example. A month ago, few even knew that Huckabee was a former governor of Arkansas, let alone a Republican candidate for president. Then karate-movie tough guy Norris -- with a cult following big enough to populate three continents -- announced he was in Huckabee's camp. (They share evangelical Christian views.)

Suddenly, Huckabee became the presidential example of tough-guy cool. You thought Fred Thompson was going to be the law-and-order candidate? He was looking like a worn-out hound dog Wednesday night as Huckabee strode into the debate with the still buffed-up, 67-year-old Norris by his side.

"If you are going after those evildoers, you want Norris with you," said longtime Democratic strategist Rick Taylor, only half-joking. "That's how I look at it. Norris for secretary of Defense. I feel safer already."

NYC Paid The Bills For Rudy Giuliani's Extramarital Affair

An excerpt from the NY Times:

Late in his tenure as mayor of New York, Rudolph W. Giuliani billed tens of thousands of dollars in travel expenses to little-known city agencies as he was beginning an extramarital affair, a political Web site reported yesterday.

The report, on the Politico Web site, cited documents obtained under the New York State Freedom of Information Law. But it was unclear from those documents whether Mr. Giuliani allocated those travel costs, from 1999 through 2001, to obscure city offices in an attempt to conceal expenses associated with the relationship or for some accounting purpose.

Mike Huckabee Wins Over Florida and Iowa Voters

SPECIAL ALERT

InsiderAdvantage Poll Of CNN/YouTube Debate And Controversy After Debate

By Matt Towery
Southern Political Report
Copyright © 2007 Creators Syndicate

November 28, 2007 —

Due to transmission issues our live coverage of the debate aftermath was interrupted. However, our cameras captured the moment when Matt Towery and Tom Baxter informed Governor Huckabee, who was surrounded by national press, that the survey of both Iowa and Florida Republicans conducted by InsiderAdvantage/Majority Opinion Research showed Mike Huckabee the winner of tonight's CNN/YouTube debate.

The Florida survey conducted with the Florida Chamber of Commerce showed the following results:

Huckabee: 44%
Giulani: 18%
Romney: 13%
McCain: 10%
Thompson: 5%
Paul: 4%
Hunter: 1%
Tancredo: 1%
Rest: undecided

The survey of 341 Republicans who stated they were undecided, intended to watch the debate and agreed to phone in their opinion immediately after the ending was weighted for age and gender. It has a margin of error of +/- 6%.

A survey of Iowa Republicans of over 1,035 Iowa Republicans taken in the last twenty minutes of the debate showed Huckabee the winner in that state as well. The numbers virtually mirrored Florida. They were:

Huckabee: 32%
Romney: 16%
Giuliani: 12%
McCain: 10%
Thompson: 7%
Paul: 6%
Tancredo: 2%
Hunter: 0%
Rest: undecided

Interestingly, the Iowa poll did not survey only undecided voters. Yet, both a survey of undecided voters in Florida and a general survey in Iowa showed Huckabee the winner.

In the media Spin Room, most of the major candidates were left with little if any media attention as virtually all print and broadcast media circled Governor Huckabee.

"Dr. Falwell's vision of helping students to start with nothing to believe they can change the world is exactly what our campaign is all about."

Republican Presidential Candidate Ballgame

Eight Republican ballplayers suited up for a game under the lights tonight in St. Petersburg, Florida.

John McCain sang the national anthem and his voice was generally appreciated.

Unfortunately, Ron Paul went to the wrong ball park, and must have thought it was supposed to be a track meet because he showed up with his running shoes.

The game opened up with an exchange between Giuliani and Romney that must have led viewers to believe it was a minor league game.

Rudy Giuliani did poorly at fielding questions. And when he stepped into the box his batter's stance was a bit wide, and he stood far to the left of home plate. He played poorly, but the talking heads in the post-game show gave him a walk.

Fred Thompson threw a bean ball at Romney and Huckabee. However his video backfired when neither of the targets ducked and the pitch went wide. The spit ball he threw at Giuliani was a little more effective, but not much.

Mitt Romney looked good in his uniform but still managed to strike out. He hit a foul ball, when he refused to answer a question about waterboarding. Fouled again when he refused to answer a question about the Confederate flag, and took a third strike when he refused to answer a question about gays in the military. He never got the bat off his shoulders.

Mike Huckabee was tonight's long ball hitter and managed several stand-up triples. He was the best debater, used humor appropriately, and when attacked he answered for himself in a manner that was neither evasive nor defensive. Huckabee is looking good just as the ballots are about to be cast for the all-star game.

Throughout the game, Duncan Hunter was warming up in the bullpen, however, he never got in the game.

And, Tom Tancredo could be seen up in the stands where he was trying to track down the peanut salesman to make sure he wasn't an illegal alien.

Huckabee Now Leads In Iowa

"The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of the Iowa caucus finds former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee with 28% of the vote, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney with 25% support, and everyone else far behind. National frontrunner Rudy Giuliani gets just 12% of the vote in Iowa at this time while former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson is the only other candidate in double digits at 11%....

"....Compared to our prior survey, the trend is unmistakable—Huckabee has gone up and just about everybody else has gone down."

Huckabee Is A Fiscal Conservative

Huckabee is a Fiscal Conservative
By Dick Morris

As Mike Huckabee rises in the polls, an inevitable process of vetting him for conservative credentials is under way in which people who know nothing of Arkansas or of the circumstances of his governorship weigh in knowingly about his record. As his political consultant in the early '90s and one who has been following Arkansas politics for 30 years, let me clue you in: Mike Huckabee is a fiscal conservative.

A recent column by Bob Novak excoriated Huckabee for a "47 percent increase in state tax burden." But during Huckabee's years in office, total state tax burden -- all 50 states combined -- rose by twice as much: 98 percent, increasing from $743 billion in 1993 to $1.47 trillion in 2005.

In Arkansas, the income tax when he took office was 1 percent for the poorest taxpayers and 7 percent for the richest, exactly where it stood when he left the statehouse 11 years later. But, in the interim, he doubled the standard deduction and the child care credit, repealed capital gains taxes for home sales, lowered the capital gains rate, expanded the homestead exemption and set up tax-free savings accounts for medical care and college tuition.

Most impressively, when he had to pass an income tax surcharge amid the drop in revenues after Sept. 11, 2001, he repealed it three years later when he didn't need it any longer.

He raised the sales tax one cent in 11 years and did that only after the courts ordered him to do so. (He also got voter approval for a one-eighth-of-one-cent hike for parks and recreation.)

He wants to repeal the income tax, abolish the IRS and institute a "fair tax" based on consumption, and opposes any tax increase for Social Security.

And he can win in Iowa....

CNN/YouTube Republican Presidential Candidates Debate

Tomorrow, Wednesday November 28, at 8:00 p.m. ET, the Republican presidential hopefuls will meet in St. Petersburg, Florida to face off in the CNN/YouTube debate.

The CNN producers have culled through more than 3,500 video submissions to select about 40 to be used in the debate.

CNN's political director, Sam Feist has given us an idea of what to expect, "The questions are funny. Some of them are striking. Some of them are sad. They are incredibly meaningful."

And, for those of you who just can't wait for tomorrow, I share below a clip from a previous Republican debate.

Joe Carter Assumes Role In Huckabee Campaign

Joe Carter is one of evangelicalism's most prominent bloggers. If you do not read Evangelical Outpost, you should.

Joe recently took a leave of absence from his position at the Family Research Council and moved to Little Rock to oversee research and rapid response communications for the Mike Huckabee campaign. This seems to be a perfect match, and Joe seems to be getting off to a great start.

We'll give Joe a few weeks to get his feet on the ground and then try to get an interview with him. In the mean time, be praying for Joe and his family as he makes the transition.

Huckabee Has One Client To Please

An excerpt from CNN online;

Huckabee is the surprise of the Republican race, and a real-time lesson in the often blurry line between God and politics.

"I put my head on the pillow and I just want to make sure that the father above is pleased," Huckabee told CNN when a recent interview turned to the subject of his his faith influences his politics. "In essence, I can say that I have one client I have to please."

This past Sunday, he demonstrated his comfort at the pulpit in a Baptist church in South Carolina.

"I am here today to talk about Jesus and not to talk about me," Huckabee told congregants.

Robert Novak - The False Journalist

"Honey...I'm Home! In Jack Nicholson Style, Robert Novak Swings His Hatchet At Huckabee

by Susan Stilley

The only thing that Robert Novak's article, "The False Conservative", proves is that Novak has apparently mastered the 'copy and paste' function on his keyboard. No journalistic digging and reporting, only repetition of rants by Arkansas discontents and organizations who feel their power threatened.

Novak cites as supposed evidence that Huckabee is not a true fiscal conservative, the fact that Huckabee criticized Bush's veto of SCHIP. What he conveniently left out (either because he didn't do his homework or because he intentionally wanted to mislead) was the fact that Huckabee was very much opposed to SCHIP. Huckabee's criticism was aimed at Bush's failure to prevent the bill from coming to him in the first place. Huckabee was on target--the veto fanned the flame of public perception that 'Republicans don't care about kids.'

Further, Novak claims that serious Republicans know that Huckabee "is a high-tax protectionist advocate of big government". I consider myself a serious Republican and know no such thing. As a former resident of Arkansas during Governor Huckabee's tenure I know that he pushed through the Arkansas Legislature the first major, broad-based tax cuts in state history - a $90 million tax relief package for Arkansas families. He also doubled the standard deduction to $2,000 for single taxpayers and $4,000 for those who are married. Some taxes he eliminated entirely: the marriage penalty, bracket creep caused by inflation, income tax on poor families, and capital gains on home sales. To encourage investment, he cut capital gains for both individuals and businesses. To help people better themselves, he provided tax credits for employee training and education. In total, he cut taxes and fees nearly 100 times during his ten-and-a-half years as Governor, saving the people of Arkansas almost $380 million.

Further, when Huckabee left office in early 2007, Arkansas had nearly $850 million in state surplus, which he urged should go back to the people in the form of either a tax rebate or tax cut. Yes, this all smacks of rampant liberalism gone haywire!

But what of the much ballyhooed gasoline tax? Novak failed to mention that Governor Huckabee inherited a road and highway infrastructure that was in dangerous disrepair, thanks in part to his immediate predecessors Bill Clinton and Jim Guy Tucker (who was convicted of a felony stemming from the WhiteWater scandal). With overwhelming support of the residents of Arkansas, Governor Huckabee presided over major rebuilding of Arkansas highways that not only helped the economy but prevented disasters like the bridge collapse recently seen in Minnesota. It is a fiscally conservative position to propose that road repair is primarily the responsibility of the state (not the federal government) and taxes for such rebuilding projects should come from those who use the roads most.

The absence of such details from Novak's smear piece indicate either lazy journalism or something much worse. Maybe Novak really has done his homework, knows at least some of these facts, yet is purposely trying to skew the story. After all, he certainly seems to be scared, or appalled, by the 'inherent danger' that is Mike Huckabee. Yes, Huckabee is a dangerous man because he is one of those long anticipated and greatly feared EVANGELICALS.

Novak writes:

"The rise of evangelical Christians as the force that blasted the GOP out of minority status during the past generation always contained an inherent danger: What if these new Republican acolytes supported not merely a conventional conservative but one of their own? That has happened with Huckabee, a former Baptist minister educated at Ouachita Baptist University and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary."

Yikes, a Baptist! Horror of Horrors!

Contrary to Novak's opinion, I don't believe the prospect of a Huckabee presidency "makes real conservatives shudder". What makes real conservatives shudder is the growing suspicion that many of the Republican elite are so driven by their own agenda and lust for power that they are willing to besmirch and discard one from their own party just because he is an evangelical.

The description Novak gives of how the Republican party has made use of evangelicals is reminiscent of the biblical story of King David's son, Amnon who raped his sister, Tamar. After Amnon got what he wanted from her, he "hated her with very great hatred".

And Amnon said to her, "Get up! Go!" But she said to him, "No, my brothers, for this wrong in sending me away is greater than the other that you did to me." But he would not listen to her. He called the young man who served him and said, "Put this woman out of my presence and bolt the door after her." (2 Samuel 13:15-17)

Are evangelicals being told to, "Get up! Go!"? If they leave and the door is bolted behind them, to which door will they go knocking?

Mike Huckabee, The Democrats' Worst Nightmare

Democrats were never frightened of Giuliani and Romney. Giuliani and Romney both have more skeletons in their closets than the Adams Family. However, Dems are starting to worry about Huckabee. Huckabee is not just a consistent conservative around whom Republicans can coalesce, but he is also a populist who is becoming very popular with Independents, and yes, Democrats. In a recent Zogby poll, Huckabee polls better than any other Republican candidate in a race against Hillary -- Huckabee gets 44% of the vote to Hillary's 39%. Further, Huckabee is the only candidate in either party who has previously beat the Clinton machine in a political race. Democrats do not want to face Huckabee in the general election.

The Huffington Post had this to say,

"The infatuation with Huckabee at first seems easier to understand: he appears easy-going and witty, unlike, for instance, Romney and his glacial grin; he seems laid back, but not lethargic like Fred Thompson; he doesn't openly hate poor people and immigrant children like, well, everyone else in the Republican party; and, so temptingly, the Wall Street Journal despises him. This is all good, but surely it's not good enough to give him the old McCain 2000 treatment, as the slothful mainstream media is already doing (they're bored, he's refreshing, they love him)."

Mike Huckabee is the Democrats' worst nightmare.

Huckabee Only Candidate Who Has Previously Beat Hillary

An excerpt from U.S. News & World Report;

Surging Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee today said that his success in Democratic Arkansas proves that he has the background and training to take on the Clinton political machine on the national stage.

"None of them have ever run against the Clinton political machine," he told reporters in a conference call today, referring to other GOP candidates. "That means something."

Huckabee's history as governor of Arkansas is an unusual one; he became a rare statewide-elected Republican in a state where the old Clinton political machine is still in operation. In answering questions from U.S. News, he said that Sen. Hillary Clinton's operation is very similar to the old Bill Clinton campaign, mostly because both share the same operatives and tactics.

He credited the senator with being mature and "ruthless." ...

REPUBLICAN SPORTSHOOTERS ASSOCIATION ENDORSES HUCKABEE

Mike Huckabee Receives Endorsement of Republican Sportshooters Association

November 26, 2007

Little Rock, AR – Former Arkansas Governor and Republican Presidential Candidate Mike Huckabee received the endorsement of the Republican Sportshooters Association at a sportsmen’s “meet and greet and skeet shoot” just outside Spartanburg, South Carolina yesterday.

“The Second Amendment is not about loving guns, it is about ensuring freedom,” said Huckabee.
During his remarks, Huckabee told the crowd the story about the rusty old 20 gauge shotgun in his rifle cabinet at home that was his father’s gun, and how one day that gun will be his sons. “You don’t hear stories about fathers passing down video games to their sons,” he quipped.

Wayne Wilkinson, President of the Republican Sportshooters Association, stated: “Mike Huckabee is the authentic consistent conservative, who shares our love of faith, family and freedom. The preservation, promotion, and protection of faith, family, and freedom is the mission of the Republican Sportshooters Association. It is our honor to endorse a candidate who shares our mission and shares our values.”

Huckabee, an ardent supporter of the Second Amendment, was named one of Outdoor Life Magazine’s “25 Most Influential Hunters and Fishermen” earlier this month.

He also has an A+ from the National Rifle Association, an organization in which he has been a lifelong member. Last year, Huckabee won the prestigious One Shot Antelope Shot in Lander, Wyoming – along with National Wild Turkey Federation President Rob Keck and Ranger Boats Founder Forrest Wood.

Huckabee picked up the endorsement after nearly 24-hours of non-stop campaigning in South Carolina, which included attending Saturday’s Clemson-South Carolina football game, speaking at two church services, attending a reception at the home of State Senator David Thomas in Greenville, and skeet shooting (with his wife Janet) at the sportsmen’s event in Spartanburg on Sunday.

Rudy is right that Romney can't be trusted, Romney is right that Giuliani can't be trusted

An excerpt from an article written by Dan Balz the Washington Post;

"With Rudolph W. Giuliani looking to spring a surprise against Mitt Romney in the state hosting the nation's first primary, the race for the Republican presidential nomination took a sharply negative turn here Sunday as the two candidates traded accusations about taxes, crime, immigration, abortion and ethical standards."

The funny thing is that they are both right about the other's record. There is little about either candidate that would lead someone to trust them.

Republican Presidential Candidates On The Sunday News

James Carville, appearing on Meet The Press, shared his thoughts on the Republican race. "I think that Huckabee is the most interesting, and the best politician, and the best campaigner of the Republicans."

Meanwhile, over at CNN Late Edition, Wolf Blitzer was interviewing Huckabee. Huckabee's strength is his emphasis upon domestic issues, however, he spoke eloquently on foreign policy issues related to Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.

Carville's wife, Mary Matalin, (politics makes strange bedfellows) must have aching eye muscles after her appearance alongside her husband on Meet The Press. She is a Fred Thompson supporter, and every time someone said something negative about Fred she rolled her eyes so far back in her head that I thought she was going into convulsions.

And, she had plenty of opportunity to roll her eyes because there were plenty of negative things said about Thompson, -- some quite colorful.

"With all due respect, I think Fred Thompson is running like a dry creek," commented Bob Shrum, a Democrat strategist.

But it wasn't just Democrats poking fun at Thompson. Mike Murphy, a Republican strategist said, "And Fred's gotta do something. Fred's a friend of mine, but watching him campaign is like watching a big bear stand up and try to dance on ice."

Meanwhile, over on Fox News Sunday, Chris Wallace was interviewing Thompson. I thought it was one of Thompson's better interviews, meaning that he only said "uh" about 300 times. Thompson became quite upset when confronted with his declining poll results and statements from two Fox contributors who criticized his campaign. Thompson accused Fox of a history of only saying negative things about him. That is probably true. Fox has been blatant in its support of Giuliani, while trying to present a facade of "fair and balanced." Nevertheless, there have been plenty of legitimately negative things to say about Thompson and his campaign.

Over at CNN Late Edition, Ron Brownstein, author of The Second Civil War spoke of how conservative Republicans have fragmented their votes, splitting up between Huckabee, Thompson, and Romney. Meanwhile, Giuliani has been raking in nearly all of moderate and liberal Republican support and has, as Bob Shrum indicated on Meet The Press, done everything possible to portray himself as the 9/11 Giuliani and not talk about any of his other incarnations (as seen in the video below).

Giuliani is a liberal. He does not deny it. In fact, he seems to be proud of it.

However, it was funny to hear Mitt Romney attack Mike Huckabee as a liberal. He was quoted on CNN Late Edition, "Republican voters are looking for a conservative, and he is a liberal. I'm a conservative." Romney is panicking about the sudden decompression and loss of altitude of his campaign in Iowa. The oxygen masks have fallen from overhead but evidently Romney is breathing in something other than oxygen. His attempts to portray Huckabee as a liberal are not sticking. In fact, Huckabee has become the candidate of choice for evangelical social conservatives in Iowa and leads Romney by more than 2:1.

Huckabee is the only consistent conservative in the first tier of the race. However, the humor comes not just from Romney's desperation, but the irony of him having the audacity to call anyone a liberal. Consider the following video;

It was a fun Sunday news day. I can hardly wait till next week.

Tony Blair "Does Do God"

An excerpt from TimesOnline;

TONY BLAIR has admitted that his Christianity played a “hugely important” role during his premiership but he was forced to play down his religious conviction for fear of being seen by the public as “a nutter”.

In his most frank television interview about his religious beliefs, Blair confesses he would have found it difficult to do the job of prime minister had he not been able to draw on his faith.

The admission confirms why Alastair Campbell, then Blair’s director of communications, was so wary of the prime minister mentioning religion. “We don’t do God,” he once said.

In a documentary to be broadcast on BBC1 next Sunday, Campbell now says of his former boss: “Well, he does do God – in quite a big way.”

The former spin doctor reveals that Christianity was so important to Blair that “wherever you were in the world on a Sunday you had to find a church”.

Huckabee Rising

According to Forbes;

After a series of lackluster performances by Fred Thompson, who saw his poll numbers peak just as he announced his candidacy, social conservatives began to look for candidates they could love more, and they may have found one in the doe-eyed minister/governor from Arkansas.

Huckabee’s rise is significant; a quick statistical test suggests that there’s less than a 1 in 1,000 chance that his recent trend is due to random variation in polls. He has gained, on average, 0.07 percentage points per day since Aug. 1 (that’s a little over half the rate at which Thompson has lost support since Sept. 12, when he may have reached his political zenith on the national level).

Thompson's Campaign Desperate

The following is an excerpt from The Van Der Galiën Gazette;

When Wallace confronted Thompson with bad polls, Thompson reacted angrily. “[F]or you to highlight nothing but the negatives in terms of the polls and then put on your own guys who have been predicting for four months, really, that I couldn’t do it, kind of skew things a little bit. There’s a lot of other opinion out there,” he said.

Wallace would have none of it and denied that Fox is going after this Republican candidate (for president). “Do you know anybody who thinks you’ve run a great campaign, sir?” the Fox host asked.

Thompson’s angry response: “It’s not for me to come here and try to convince you that somebody else thinks I’ve run a great campaign.”

For Thompson to go after Fox is quite telling. At first it gave me the impression that he - and his campaign - is worried. He’s been blasted for being lazy, inactive, passive, lacking in energy, and he really hasn’t done anything to combat that image. In fact, he has only reinforced the already existing prejudice.

Thompson’s attack smelled like desperation to me.

Huckabee: Americans Financing Terror At The Gas Pumps

Huckabee: America Enslaved to Saudi Oil

WASHINGTON (AP) — Consumers are financing both sides in the war on terror because of the actions of U.S. ally Saudi Arabia, Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee said Sunday.

The former Arkansas governor made the comments following what he suggested was a muted response by the Bush administration to a Saudi court's sentence of six months in jail and 200 lashes for a woman who was gang raped.

"The United States has been far too involved in sort of looking the other way, not only at the atrocities of human rights and violation of women," Huckabee said on CNN's "Late Edition."

"Every time we put our credit card in the gas pump, we're paying so that the Saudis get rich — filthy, obscenely rich, and that money then ends up going to funding madrassas," schools "that train the terrorists," said Huckabee. "America has allowed itself to become enslaved to Saudi oil. It's absurd. It's embarrassing."

Huckabee said "I would make the United States energy independent within 10 years and tell the Saudis they can keep their oil just like they can keep their sand, that we won't need either one of them."

Huckabee Leads Romney 2:1

"Huckabee, a Baptist minister, has soared to 44 percent support among evangelical Protestants, up from 16 percent last summer; he now leads Romney, a Mormon, by 2-1 among evangelicals, who account for nearly four in 10 likely caucus-goers. Huckabee also leads Romney among all weekly church-goers, albeit by a much closer 8 points, the network reported."

Mike Huckabee, A Different Kind Of Candidate

The following is an excerpt from The Economist;

“THERE are no perfect candidates. We had one 2,000 years ago, but we crucified him,” says John Stemberger, a family-values enthusiast from Florida. That pretty much captures the mood among socially conservative voters. If you think abortion on demand is a holocaust and gay marriage threatens to undermine the conventional sort, you are unlikely to back a Democrat. On the other hand, none of the leading Republicans thrills the religious right either.

Rudy Giuliani is pro-choice on abortion. Fred Thompson lacks gumption. Mitt Romney is a Mormon. John McCain tells a moving story of his time being tortured by godless communists: one of his Vietnamese guards secretly loosened the ropes that trussed him and, by way of explanation, drew a cross in the dirt with his foot. But Mr McCain has long riled religious conservatives, once calling the late televangelist Jerry Falwell an “agent of intolerance”.

Mike Huckabee, "A Born Leader"

The following is an excerpt from a biographical piece on Mike Huckabee which ran in the Concord Monitor:

Mike Huckabee was never about fire and brimstone. As a preacher, he was buoyant. The first time he took to the pulpit, as a 16-year-old preaching on a Sunday night, he turned water into wine. Sort of.

"He had a clear bottle of water, a gallon jug of water, and he turned it red," said Don Still, who grew up with Huckabee in the small city of Hope, Ark. "He talked about how God cleanses our soul. He was probably in the 11th or 12th grade, and he was probably taking chemistry and learned it in chemistry."

Science or miracle, Still was impressed. Looking back now, Still said he knew then that Huckabee - or Mike, as he seems to be known to everyone in Arkansas - was destined for politics, "a born leader."

And the candidate doing well in national polls, Rudy Giuliani, is not doing well in the early states.

Congressman Bob Inglis Endorses Mike Huckabee

News Release: Mike Huckabee Welcomes Congressman Bob Inglis to Presidential Campaign Team

November 21, 2007

Little Rock, AR – U.S. Congressman Bob Inglis (R-SC) formally endorsed former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee for President tonight on a conference call with supporters, it was announced.

“Mike Huckabee is a conservative focused on the future and rooted in principle. He's also the candidate best able to unite Republicans, appeal to independents and win over some Democrats. I'm glad to be on his team,” said Inglis.

Said Huckabee: “I’m honored to have Congressman Inglis’s endorsement. Bob’s wealth of experience in Congress and his principled leadership qualities are tremendous assets. I look forward to working with Bob and other members of our South Carolina leadership teams in ensuring a successful January 19th Primary Day in the Palmetto State.”

Rep. Inglis is serving his fifth term overall in Congress. Initially elected to represent the Fourth District of South Carolina (Greenville, Spartanburg, Union, and part of Laurens County) in 1993, he stepped down to run for the U.S. Senate in 1998. He was elected to Congress again in 2004 and re-elected in 2006. He serves on the Science & Technology Committee and is Ranking Member on the Energy & Environment Subcommittee. He also sits on the Foreign Affairs Committee during the 110th Congress; chaired the Research Subcommittee of the Science Committee in the 109th Congress; and has served on both the Judiciary and the Education and Workforce Committees. He currently co-chairs the House Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Caucus.

Inglis and his wife Mary Ann are graduates of Duke University and got married after his year at the University of Virginia School of Law. They have five children, ages 21 to 10 (Robert, 21; Mary Ashton, 19; McCullough, 17; Andrews, 12; Meade, 10). The Inglis’s are members of Redeemer Presbyterian Church of Travelers Rest.

Inglis joins an already extensive team of South Carolina leaders supporting Mike Huckabee for President. In February, Huckabee announced the support of the family of former Governor Carroll Campbell, with former First Lady Iris Campbell serving as Honorary Co-Chair and Governor Campbell’s youngest son Mike Campbell as State Chairman.

In May, former Governor David Beasley and his wife, former First Lady Mary Wood Beasley, joined the Huckabee campaign. Last month, former State Republican Party Chairman George Graham joined a series of legislators, including five from the upstate, in backing Mike Huckabee for President.

Huckabee will return to South Carolina on Saturday, Nov. 24 to attend the USC-Clemson football game, where he will campaign with former World Wrestling Champion Ric Flair while meeting and greeting supporters beginning at 5:00 PM outside the West Entrance to Williams Brice Stadium in spaces 433-434.

On Sunday, Huckabee will speak at services at both Gateway Baptist Church in Irmo and the First Baptist Church of Fountain Inn, prior to attending a Meet and Greet at the home of Senator David Thomas in Greenville and a Sportsmen’s Meet and Greet at the Spartanburg Gun Club, which is located at 180 Fretwell Rd in Spartanburg.

Thompson Going Negative, A Response

Press Release: Huckabee Campaign Manager Responds To Thompson Negative Attacks

November 25, 2007

Little Rock, AR - Huckabee for President Campaign Manager Chip Saltsman issued the following statement today in response to news releases by the Thompson campaign about Governor Mike Huckabee:

"The desperate attacks on Governor Huckabee by Fred Thompson are evidence that Fred's show is running out of material and he's left to cranking out re-runs. Fred has been confused about being pro-life, but Governor Huckabee never has been. Governor Huckabee helped successfully lead the passage of human life amendment in his state and as governor signed numerous pro-life bills. Fred was taking money as a Washington lobbyist to be a mouthpiece for a pro-abortion group when Governor Huckabee was leading the March for Life. Governor Huckabee always has supported a Human Life Amendment, but also knows that the repeal of Roe v. Wade is better than the current laws.

"The Thompson campaign is also distorting Governor Huckabee's views on illegal immigration by failing to recognize that sealing the border is his top priority. Regarding legislation to stop illegals from getting drivers' licenses, Act 2210 of 2005 was signed into law by Governor Huckabee. The legislation made it illegal for a driver's license to be issued to anyone who could not prove legal residency in Arkansas.

"It's not surprising that Fred has hired an attack dog to churn out the very kind of 'hit and run' politics that Americans are sick of. Governor Huckabee is rising to Fred's fall precisely because he is telling America what he would do to solve America's problems while Fred is left to trying to resort to political dumpster diving."

Mike Huckabee's Thanksgiving Message

In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed the last Thursday of November to be a "Day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father." Since I am a preacher who loves to expound upon written texts, I want to share with you an excerpt of this proclamation:

In the midst of a civil war of unequalled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign states to invite and provoke their aggressions, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere, except in the theatre of military conflict; while that theatre has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union.

Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the fields of peaceful industry to the national defence [sic] have not arrested the plough, the shuttle, or the ship; the axe has enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than heretofore. Population has steadily increased, notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege, and the battle-field, and the country, rejoicing in the consciousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years with large increase of freedom.

No human counsel hath devised, nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy.

It has seemed to me fit and proper that that they should be solemnly, reverently, and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and with one voice, by the whole American people.

When I read these words, I was floored by President Lincoln's optimism.

By the time that Mr. Lincoln had issued this proclamation, more than 350,000 men from both the North and the South had died in bitter fighting—at a time when the national population was only 30 million. (It would get even worse; another 300,000 would die before the war's end.) Still, the President remained positive during a time of crisis. Even though the country was falling apart right before his eyes, Mr. Lincoln still could find a reason to give thanks to Almighty God.

Today, we have serious problems in our country; there is no denying this fact. The threat of terrorism is real. The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have divided our nation. The economy has been weakened by high gasoline prices, rampant foreclosures, and a weakened U.S. dollar. On top of this, respect for traditional moral values, such as marriage and family, are under assault from the left-wing elements of our society.

Despite these problems, I remain hopeful. I truly believe that America's best days are still ahead of her. And for this, I am thankful to God.

I am thankful that one day the war on terror will end, not because we have lost, but because we have won!

I am thankful that one day our economy will rebound, not because of governmental micro-management, but as a result of America's entrepreneurial resolve.

I am thankful that one day the born and the unborn will be equal under the eyes of the law in every state.

Now I can't promise you that these goals will be achieved in my lifetime or even in yours. I cannot predict the future. However, I can promise you that if I am entrusted with the office that was once held by Abraham Lincoln, I will fight to restore America's collective optimism.

America needs a President who is not moved by what he sees. Instead, America needs a President who will be moved by what he sees in his heart.

What I see in my heart for this great country can hardly be expressed with words. But with your continued prayers and support, I pray that I will be able to express these ideals through my actions as President.

Thank you. God bless you. God bless America.

And, before I forget, happy Thanksgiving.

Mike Huckabee

Hillary's Secret Police Returns

The following is an excerpt from an article by Dick Morris and Eileen McGann:

Are the Clinton secret police back on patrol?

It looks like they may be making a late campaign comeback.

In a week-end column, Robert Novak alleged that “agents” of Hillary Clinton are “spreading the word that she has scandalous information” about Barack Obama, but decided not to use it. (How considerate of her!)

Obama has come out swinging, accusing the Clinton campaign of trying to swift-boat him and demanding that Clinton either release the information or admit that there is none.

The Clinton camp is shocked that anyone would ever think that it would use such tactics!

Clinton campaign Communications Director (and KGB enforcer look-alike) Howard Wolfson claimed that the campaign had “no idea” what Novak was talking about. Absolutely!

And, as usual, Wolfson tried to turn the embarrassing issue for Hillary into a problem for Barack, claiming he was naive for believing what was in the Novak column.

“A Republican-leaning journalist runs a blind item designed to set Democrats against one another. Experienced Democrats see this for what it is. Others get distracted and thrown off their games,” Wolfson said.

Does anybody really believe that Hillary hasn’t been gathering dirt on her opponents? Anyone with any experience in politics knows one thing for sure: Hillary Clinton plays the game rough and dirty — and she has a sordid history of using private investigators to find scandals in the background of anyone who gets in her way.
