In Honor Of The Democrat Candidates

I’m thankful that the sun and the moon
Are both hung up so high
That no pretentious hand can stretch
And pull them from the sky.

If they were not, I have no doubt
But some reforming ass
Would recommend to take them down
And light the world with gas.

We live in a world of sin and sorrow, otherwise there would not be any Democratic Party.

The Supreme Court That Barack Obama Will Give Us

Laura Echevarria has made available a transcript from Barack Obama's speech to the Planned Parenthood Action Fund. Here is an excerpt:

I have worked on these issues for decades now. I put Roe at the center of my lesson plan on reproductive freedom when I taught Constitutional Law. Not simply as a case about privacy but as part of the broader struggle for women’s equality. Steve and Pam will tell you that we fought together in the Illinois State Senate against restrictive choice legislation—laws just like the federal abortion laws, the federal abortion bans that are cropping up. I’ve stood up for the freedom of choice in the United States Senate and I stand by my votes against the confirmation of Judge Roberts and Samuel Alito.

Pure Barry Goldwater Conservativism?

By Kevin Stilley

“We need to return to pure Barry Goldwater conservatism.” That is what one radio talk-show host had to say this week. To most of the listeners that probably sounded pretty innocuous. However, it speaks volumes to the struggle that has taken place in the Republican primary this election cycle.

Since the Reagan Revolution the Republican party’s strength has been the coalition between economic conservatives, national security conservatives, and social conservatives. Would a “return to pure Barry Goldwater conservatism” maintain this coalition? You decide after reading the following quote of Barry Goldwater.

“And I’m frankly sick and tired of the political preachers across this country telling me as a citizen that if I want to be a moral person, I must believe in ‘A,’ ‘B,’ ‘C,’ and ‘D.” Just who do they think they are? And from where do they presume to claim the right to dictate their moral beliefs to me?

“And I am even more angry as a legislator who must endure the threats of every religious group who thinks it has some God-granted right to control my vote on every roll call in the Senate.”

The Roman Empire could not tolerate Christianity because it had an absolute standard by which it could judge Roman culture. The Republican Empire has grown weary of Evangelicals because they have an absolute standard by which they can judge Republican culture.

The stability of Reagan’s three-legged stool has been tested this election cycle. However, it has not been, as some suggested, the Evangelicals who have tried to reduce it to a two-legged stool. Most Evangelicals are not only social conservatives, but economic and national security conservatives, as well. However, Evangelicals have an absolute standard by which to judge economic conservatism when it becomes little more than greed, and Evangelicals have an absolute standard by which to judge national security conservatism when it becomes little more than hatred. Economic and national security conservatives, like Barry Goldwater, have grown weary with social conservatives who “presume to claim the right to dictate their moral beliefs,” and this election cycle economic and national security conservatives have used their control of print media like National Review magazine, radio media like Clear Channel, and television media like Fox News to fight back the tide of social conservatives who have mistakenly believed that they had a chair at the Republican table.

As one radio talk-show host put it, they think “We need to return to pure Barry Goldwater conservatism” — a conservatism that does not include Evangelicals. If they get their wish, it will be a long time before there is a Republican in the White House or before Republicans gain control of either house of Congress.

New York Times Boosts McCain Support

The New York Times did McCain a huge favor by printing spurious innuendo which implied that John McCain had been involved in an inappropriate relationship. Conservatives who had themselves been attacking McCain's conservative credentials quickly came to McCain's defense. McCain needs to send the New York Times a thank you note for helping unite feuding Republicans.

"The nagging question begs to be answered. Why would the top Democrat presidential candidate feel more comfortable attending an Afrocentric church? America’s New God: When Politics Trumps Faith

America’s New God: When Politics Trumps Faith
By John W. Whitehead

“Nearly 30 years after religious conservatives decided to re-enter the political arena—after abandoning it as ‘dirty’ and leading to compromise—what do they have to show for it? The country remains sharply divided and the reconciling message they used to preach has been obscured by the crass pursuit of the golden ring of political power. In the end, they got neither the power, nor the Kingdom; only the glory and even that is now fading.” —Cal Thomas, former vice president of the Moral Majority

It’s one thing for Christians—or any other religion, for that matter—to get involved in politics. But it’s a different matter altogether when religious individuals allow politics to take precedence over their religious beliefs.

This is most evident as the race for the White House heats up and vocal Christians such as James Dobson attempt to steer the outcome by endorsing a particular candidate. Yet I can’t help but wonder exactly what these Christians are really putting their faith in. Are they after greater power and influence? Do they think a Christian in the White House will solve the problems that plague our nation?

It hasn’t done us much good yet. As Frank Schaeffer, author of Crazy For God, pointed out in a recent editorial, “In 2000, we elected a president who claimed he believed God created the earth and who, as president, put car manufacturers and oil company’s interests ahead of caring for that creation. We elected a pro-life Republican Congress that did nothing to actually care for pregnant women and babies. And they took their sincere evangelical followers for granted, and played them for suckers.”

David Kuo, who served as Special Assistant to President Bush from 2001-2003, elaborates on this in his book, Tempting Faith, when he describes the way in which the Bush Administration manipulated evangelical Christians: “Rove’s Public Liaison office had a religious outreach team in constant contact with evangelical and social conservative groups about every facet of the president’s policy and political agenda…. As part of their outreach they held weekly—or more often, as necessary—conference calls to update that community on events and announcements while simultaneously soliciting their feedback.”

Kuo continues, “This network of people covered virtually every area of evangelical Christianity. The calls began with an overview of what the president would be talking about in the coming week. If necessary, participants were asked to talk to their people about whatever issue was pending. Talking points were distributed and advice was solicited. That advice rarely went much further than the conference call. There wasn’t any malice or negligence behind this. It was just that the true purpose of these calls was to keep prominent social conservatives and their groups or audiences happy. In most ways it wasn’t a tough sell.”

In fact, Kuo says, it wasn’t difficult to convince Christians that President Bush was on the right side of virtually any tactic. “It should have been a whole lot harder because Christians should have demanded a whole lot more. But all too often, when put before power, Christian leaders wilt.”

Thus, we get to the heart of the problem when religion and politics merge. Rarely can they coexist without one trumping the other. Unfortunately, all too often, politics will trump religion. The result, as we have seen, is that religious individuals—Christians, in particular—smother their faith and become servants to political power. Yet for the Christian, politics and faith should never be synonymous; they are not two equal loyalties.

This is not to say that religious individuals should not be vocal in matters of politics and other national concerns. Clearly, our nation is in need of moral guidance. Regrettably, apart from its ongoing tirades against homosexuality, the Christian Right has little to say about anything other than politics. They seem to have forgotten that politics, by its very nature, stands in stark contrast to what Christianity is supposed to stand for. Politics does not operate out of love, speak truth to power or seek the best interests of people. Indeed, politics is driven toward division, compromise, deceit and, inevitably, corruption.

Jesus Christ rejected politics as the solution for what ails us. Read the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5), for example, and you will get a clear sense of his priorities. He was all about helping the poor, showing mercy (even to your enemies) and being a peacemaker. He did not bless the powerful; rather, he said, “Blessed are the meek.”

Neither did Jesus seek political favors or power. He was apolitical. In a sense, he could even be described as being anti-politics, given his tendency to attack and undermine political power. He had no qualms about getting in politicians’ faces, so to speak. Even with his back ripped open and bleeding, Jesus stood before Pilate, the man who had the power of life and death over him, and spoke truth to power: “You could have no power over me if it were not given you from above,” he admonished him.

Jesus understood that the legitimate use of power does not include using it to impose one’s will upon others. From the Christian standpoint, the proper use of power is to seek justice for all. Thus, if Christianity is to serve its true purpose and be a moral compass of society, Christians must remain clear of the constraints and compromises entailed in political affiliation and take stands for truth. Inevitably, speaking truth to power will mean standing outside the political establishment and criticizing the political Herods of this world, i.e., the government and its policies.

When it comes right down to it, the most appropriate role of religion in politics lies in its ability to define moral issues and speak truth to power. The voice of moral authority, enabled and enhanced by its spiritual roots and raised without dependence upon the legitimacy of the state, will always be the highest expression of true freedom.

Christian Involvement In Ghana Politics

Mr. Daniel Dugan, Deputy Minister of Women and Children’s Affairs (MWCA) has called on Christians to discard the notion that ‘politics was a dirty game’ as politics and Christianity aim at improving people’s welfare.

Mr Dugan said it was unfortunate that Ghanaians believe that politics was not a place for Christians as according to him “the goals of Christianity is about the same as politics”.

He said while Christianity aimed at the salvation of mankind, politics and good policies aimed at the ultimate welfare of the citizenry.

The Deputy Minister made the call over the weekend when he launched the ‘Christian Journal’, a newspaper written by Christians to address all issues concerning every sector of the country.

Appealing to Christians not to shy away from politics, he stated that “when we have good Christians in the helm of affairs of politics then we are guaranteed of relative peace, harmony and economic and social success of the nation”. (An excerpt from MyJoyOnline: Read More ...)

Terrorism vs. Steroids

In this week's radio address President Bush stated, "At this moment, somewhere in the world, terrorists are planning a new attack on America. And Congress has no higher responsibility than ensuring we have the tools to stop them."

Doesn't he know that Congress has been been preoccupied with the urgently important task of trying to figure out whether or not Roger Clemens used steroids? Isn't our concern for the integrity of professional baseball why we sent these guy to Washington? We wouldn't want them to get sidetracked on to issues of national security when they can be spending thousands of hours and millions of dollars debating whether or not a baseball player took steroids.

North Korea Tops List of Persecutors

SANTA ANA, Calif., Feb. 11 /Christian Newswire/ -- This year's No. 1 spot on Open Doors' 2008 World Watch List is no stranger: North Korea has now topped the list for six years in a row.

There is no other country in the world where Christians are being persecuted in such a horrible and relentless way. The kingdom of Saudi Arabia holds a solid No. 2 place, followed closely by Iran. Maldives is No. 4.

New at No. 5 is Bhutan, moving a few places up from No. 7 last year, mainly because Somalia and Yemen saw a decrease in persecution. The No. 6 spot is taken by Yemen.

Afghanistan rose from No. 10 to No. 7.

Laos saw little change in religious freedom last year, but it moved up one place, from No. 9 to No. 8. Two new countries entered the Top 10: Uzbekistan at No. 9 and China No. 10. Uzbekistan was No. 11 last year and China No. 12.

Islam is the majority religion in six of the top 10 countries: Saudi Arabia, Iran, Maldives, Afghanistan, Yemen and Uzbekistan. Three countries have communist governments: North Korea, Laos and China. Bhutan is the only Buddhist country on the Top 10 list.

The World Watch List ranks countries according to the intensity of persecution Christians face for actively pursuing their faith. The list is compiled based on the answers to 50 questions covering various aspects of religious freedom from Open Doors' indigenous contacts, field workers and persecuted believers.

More Christians were arrested in North Korea in 2007 than in 2006. Many have been beaten, tortured or killed because of their religious beliefs. Open Doors' local source estimates the number of underground Christians to be at least 200,000, and it's likely that there are as many as 400,000 to 500,000 believers. At least a quarter of the Christians are imprisoned for their faith in political prison camps, from which people rarely get out alive.

In Shariah-ruled Saudi Arabia, the deplorable state of religious freedom remained generally unaltered in 2007. Under the kingdom's strict interpretation of Islamic law, apostasy (conversion to another religion) is punishable by death if the accused does not recant. There were no reports of executions for apostasy in 2007.

Islam is the official religion in Iran, and all laws and regulations must be consistent with the official interpretation of Shariah law. Although Christians are a recognized religious minority who are guaranteed religious freedom, they have reported imprisonment, harassment and discrimination because of their faith.

For a complete World Watch List of the Top 50 persecutors, an in-depth look at the top 10 countries on the list and a list of countries where the situation deteriorated or improved the most, go to www.OpenDoorsUSA.org.

An estimated 200 million Christians worldwide suffer interrogation, arrest and even death for their faith in Christ, with another 200 to 400 million facing discrimination and alienation. Open Doors supports and strengthens believers in the world's most difficult areas through Bible and Christian literature distribution, leadership training and assistance, Christian community development, prayer and presence ministry and advocacy on behalf of suffering believers.

President Bush At National Prayer Breakfast

Remarks by the President at National Prayer Breakfast

WASHINGTON, Feb. 7 /Christian Newswire/ -- The following text is of remarks by President Bush at National Prayer Breakfast:

THE PRESIDENT: Gracias, mi amigo. Thank you, friend. Laura and I are honored to join you all here for the 56th National Prayer Breakfast. A lot of reasons to pray, and one of course, is to strengthen us against temptation, particularly this morning -- from temptation to stay in bed. (Laughter.) Obviously there's a lot of prayerful people here. And I appreciate your warm welcome.

We have a lot of distinguished guests here today -- members of Congress, military leaders, captains of industry. Yet at this annual gathering, we are reminded of an eternal truth: When we lift our hearts to God, we're all equal in His sight. We're all equally precious; we're all equally dependent on His grace. It's fitting that we gather each year to approach our Creator in fellowship -- and to thank Him for the many blessings He has bestowed upon our families and our nation. It is fitting that we gather in prayer, because we recognize a prayerful nation is a stronger nation. (Applause.)

I want to appreciate -- I appreciate Senator Salazar and Enzi. Thank you for putting this deal on. Madam Speaker, Leader Hoyer, Leader Blunt, thank you all for being here. Welcome the members of Congress. I appreciate the heads of state who are here. Welcome to America, again. I thank the members of the Diplomatic Corps who have joined us. Appreciate the distinguished dignitaries, all the members of my Cabinet -- don't linger, get back to work. (Laughter.)

Admiral, thank you for your leadership. Always proud to be with the members of the United States military. I thank the state and local officials. Ward, thanks for your remarks. Those were awesome. I guess that's a presidential word. (Laughter.) Proud to be here with Michael W. and Debbie. They're longtime friends of our family. Thank you for lending your beautiful voice. Judge, I'm not going to hold the Texas thing against you. (Laughter.)

Every President since Dwight Eisenhower has attended the National Prayer Breakfast -- and I am really proud to carry on that tradition. It's an important tradition, and I'm confident Presidents who follow me will do the same. The people in this room come from many different walks of faith. Yet we share one clear conviction: We believe that the Almighty hears our prayers -- and answers those who seek Him. That's what we believe; otherwise, why come? Through the miracle of prayer, we believe he listens -- if we listen to his voice and seek our presence -- his presence in our lives, our hearts will change. And in so doing, in seeking God, we grow in ways that we could never imagine.

In prayer, we grow in gratitude and thanksgiving. When we spend time with the Almighty, we realize how much He has bestowed upon us -- and our hearts are filled with joy. We give thanks for our families, we give thanks for the parents who raised us, we give thanks for the patient souls who married us, and the children who make us proud each day. We give thanks for our liberty -- and the universal desire for freedom that He has written into every human heart. We give thanks for the God who made us in His image -- and redeemed us in His love.

In prayer, we grow in meekness and humility. By approaching our Maker on bended knee, we acknowledge our complete dependence on Him. We recognize that we have nothing to offer God that He does not already have -- except our love. So we offer Him that love, and ask for the grace to discern His will. We ask Him to remain near to us at all times. We ask Him to help us lead lives that are pleasing to Him. We discover that by surrendering our lives to the Almighty, we are strengthened, refreshed, and ready for all that may come.

In prayer, we also grow in boldness and courage. The more time we spend with God, the more we see that He is not a distant king, but a loving Father. Inspired by this confidence, we approach Him with bold requests: We ask Him to heal the sick, and comfort the dying, and sustain those who care for them. We ask Him to bring solace to the victims of tragedy, and help to those suffering from addiction and adversity. We ask him to strengthen our families, and to protect the innocent and vulnerable in our country. We ask Him to protect our nation from those who wish us harm -- and watch over all who stepped forward to defend us. We ask Him to bring about the day when His peace shall reign across the world -- and every tear shall be wiped away.

In prayer, we grow in mercy and compassion. We are reminded in prayer that we are all fallen creatures in need of mercy. And in seeking God's mercy, we grow in mercy ourselves. Experiencing the presence of God transforms our hearts -- and the more we seek His presence, the more we feel the tug at our souls to reach out to the poor, and the hungry, the elderly, and the infirm. When we answer God's call to love a neighbor as ourselves, we enter into a deeper friendship with our fellow man -- and a deeper relationship with our eternal Father.

I believe in the power of prayer, because I have felt it in my own life. Prayer has strengthened me in times of personal challenge. It has helped me meet the challenges of the presidency. I understand now clearly the story of the calm in the rough seas. And so at this final prayer breakfast as your President, I thank you for your prayers, and I thank our people all across America for their prayers. And I ask you not to stop in the year ahead. We have so much work to do for our country, and with the help of the Almighty, we will build a freer world -- and a safer, more hopeful, more noble America.

God bless.

Archbishop of Canterbury's Endorsement of Islamic Law

WASHINGTON, Feb. 8 /Christian Newswire/ -- On February 7, Archbishop of Canterbury endorsed the concept of permitting Islamic (Sharia) law in civil disputes in the United Kingdom. Rowan Williams' comments to the BCC have drawn fire from many sources, including British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who pointed out that British law should be based on British values.

The Institute on Religion & Democracy expressed dismay over Williams' comments and criticized the idea of elevating a legal system that does not share British values.

Ralph Webb, Director of IRD's Anglican Action Program, commented:

"Only a few months ago, Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams angered people on both the left and the right with his harsh, sweeping attack on American foreign policy. Now he has angered people by proposing that there should be some way of accommodating elements of Sharia law in British society.

"At a time when the Anglican Communion is in danger of fragmenting, Williams' comments are not helpful and run the risk of alienating some Anglicans who live under Sharia law.

Faith J.H. McDonnell, IRD Religious Liberty Program Director, commented:

"Allowing Sharia law in Britain is an act of tolerance for something that practices none of its own. We're concerned for British Muslims that have fled the intolerance of their own countries, only to find it gaining a foothold in Britain.

"Those who argue that accommodating Sharia law would be contingent upon the agreement of both parties in a dispute don't understand that there is no individual choice in Sharia law, especially for women.

"Archbishop Williams is going in exactly the wrong direction with his comments supporting Sharia law. He should be supporting Bishop Michael Nazir-Ali who has warned against the encroachment of Islamic fundamentalism in Britain, not attempting to buy off Muslim groups with appeasements."

The Institute on Religion and Democracy, founded in 1981, is an ecumenical alliance of U.S. Christians working to reform their churches' social witness, in accord with biblical and historic Christian teachings, thereby contributing to the renewal of democratic society at home and abroad.

Huckabee Sweeps The South

Huckabee & Romney After Super Tuesday

Mike Huckabee Exercising Right To Vote

Another Romney Dirty Trick

Mike Huckabee: A True Reagan Conservative

What Has Mike Huckabee Accomplished And Where Does He Stand On The Issues

ACCOMPLISHMENTS
1. With ten-and-a-half years of experience running state government, Governor Mike Huckabee of Arkansas has more relevant executive experience than any candidate in the race – either Republican or Democrat.

2. Recognized and tapped by his peers for leadership, the National Governor’s Association selected Governor Huckabee as it’s Chairman.

3. TIME Magazine honored him as one of the five best Governors in America.

4. Governor Huckabee is a fiscal conservative who cut taxes almost 100 times in the state of Arkansas, including the state’s first broad-based tax cuts, and turned a $200 million deficit into an $850 million surplus.

ISSUES
1. TAXES/ECONOMY –Governor Huckabee supports The FairTax because it will restore the “Made in America” label, making American goods 12-25% more competitive, boosting economic growth, increasing our exports, and securing American jobs. It also prevents criminals or illegal aliens from avoiding taxes, and makes the taxes we all pay 100% transparent.

2. GOVERNMENT SPENDING – Governor Huckabee is committed to reducing government spending. One way he’ll do this is by reducing the cost of welfare. Governor Huckabee will work with states to reduce welfare roles through programs like the one he implemented in Arkansas, which reduced welfare roles by 50%.

3. HEALTH CARE –Governor Huckabee will implement a consumer-based healthcare system that emphasizes preventative medicine and wellness. Because 70% of our $2 trillion dollar healthcare costs is spent treating chronic, preventable diseases, this approach will make healthcare more affordable for everybody while keeping us healthier.

4. FAMILY VALUES –Governor Huckabee supports a federal constitutional amendment to protect the right to life. He Successfully fought for Arknasas’ marriage amendment and strongly supports a similar, federal constitutional amendment defining marriage as a union between one man and one woman.

5. IMMIGRATION –Governor Huckabee will secure the border (with physical barriers, electronic surveillance, and more border-patrol personnel and detention facilities). He will also end sanctuary cities and increase penalties on, and enforcement against, employers who hire illegal immigrants. Governor Huckabee will make sure the border patrol has adequate funding to end our “catch and release” system so that everyone caught trying to enter illegally, overstaying their visa, or committing a crime will be held until they’re tried, convicted, and deported. Gov. Huckabee has also signed the Numbers USA "No Amnesty" Pledge.

6. WAR ON TERROR AND IRAQ – Governor Huckabee knows it takes a large, well-equipped military to ensure our national defense and to deter conventional military confrontations. He also knows we need large, well-equipped intelligence and Special Forces operations for our national offense – so we can effectively find and eliminate terrorist threats at home or abroad. Governor Huckabee will be a Commander in Chief who knows that IF WE HAVE TO FIGHT A WAR, our President has to fight it the way our GENERALS tell him it can be won, not the way we want it to be won.

7. ENERGY INDEPENDENCE –Governor Huckabee will implement a program to end the import of foreign oil in the next ten years by increasing domestic oil production in the short term, and then replacing oil-based energy infrastructure with alternative and renewable energies.

8. CLEMENCIES – Arkansas Governors grant clemency, but the parole board grants parole. Wayne DuMond’s parole was granted by the board and NOT Governor Huckabee.

9. TAXES –When Governor Huckabee left office, the tax rates remained exactly the same as when he first came into office. Governor Huckabee returned almost $400 million to Arkansas taxpayers, and he also DOUBLED the standard deduction for individuals and married couples, DOUBLED the childcare tax credit, and eliminated the marriage penalty. He also repealed capital gains taxes for home sales, lowered the capital gains rate by 25%, expanded the homestead exemption, and set up tax-free savings accounts for medical care and college tuition. Gov. Huckabee has also signed the Americans for Tax Reform's pledge not to raise taxes.

10. SECOND AMENDMENT-
• Lifetime member of the NRA, member for over 15 years
• First Governor to have concealed-carry permit
• Removed restrictions on carry permit holders
• Protected gun manufacturers from frivolous lawsuits
• Opposes reauthorization of the Assault Weapon Ban
• Opposes expansion of the unconstitutional “Brady Bill”
• Opposes waiting period for purchase of firearms
• Opposes background checks on private firearms transactions at gun shows
• Will nominate judges who interpret the constitution as the Founders intended, rather than as a “living document reflecting current political trends or opinions”
• An avid hunter and conservationist, and a member of the Ducks Unlimited, National Wild Turkey Federation and BASS.

New York polls show John McCain has benefited from the endorsement of Rudy Giuliani and is now leading there by a wide margin. The winner take all states of Missouri and Georgia were previously favoring Huckabee but now McCain seems to be ahead by a few percentage points. Alabama, North Carolina and Oklahoma also show the switch from Huckabee to McCain. The momentum is definitely benefiting McCain - - just one week ago Tennessee was showing a double-digit lead for Huckabee, but now polls are showing McCain in the lead there. Wisconsin was previously polling for Giuliani but has been shaded neutral as he has dropped from the race.
