Safe Boating

I am not a libertarian but I do believe that government should not generally be making laws to protect citizens from self-inflicted hardship. However, there is a very fine line between protecting someone from himself and protecting the welfare of the community as a whole. It is not always easy to differentiate where protection ends and intrusion begins.

One place where it is very clear that government has the right, and obligation, to provide regulation, is in the area of boating safety. When someone is Boating Operating Under the Influence, or otherwise boating like an idiot, they not only endanger themselves, but the lives of others, as well. Arizona has taken the initiative in providing education programs for its boaters, which include both online boating education and creative advertising.

As the primaries come to an end, and we all settle in for the push to the general election in November, I have some advice for John McCain and Barack Obama. During the primaries some of those seeking the nomination tried to prove that they were "just common folk" by downing booze with the locals.
